FAQ

We answer the most common questions we get asked about hair extensions. If you do not see the answer you are looking for please contact us directly and we will do our best to help you.

Extensions do not receive nutrients and nourishment from your scalp like your natural hair does, therefore it is vital to keep your hair nourished with the right products and avoid excessive heat.

We recommended regularly using the Maria Nila hair mask to help keep your extensions in optimum condition and also using Wella's Oil Reflections serum, on a daily basis in order to lock in moisture and shine.

Excessive heat can change the pigment of the hair and also strip the hair's moisture, which will result in the hair looking and feeling dry.

The maximum temperature that can be used on hair extensions is 180°C; excessive heat can cause extensions to discolour. This is more apparent in blonde hair.

Using a protection spray is recommended when styling with heated appliances will help prevent this and keep your extensions looking and feeling healthy. We recommend the Maria Nila heat spray.

Similar to how the UV rays cause our skin to bronze, sun exposure can cause hair extensions to lighten and change colour. Chlorine from the swimming pool and salt water from the sea and even sun cream, all have the ability to strip away the colour of the hair extensions.

To remove discolouration/brassiness from the extensions, violet and ash pigments would need to be reintroduced. Beach holidays are a very common time in which hair can turn brassy as all the elements above combined (UV rays, sun creams, salt and pool water) can discolour hair much faster than usual.

To remove brassiness and unwanted tones of orange. Specific shampoos are available. In order to correct discolouration a professional consultation from a hair stylist is recommended.

Hair which has been treated with colour could be over processed due to the fact that extensions have already been coloured. Tints, bleach and silver shampoos lift the hair cuticle to penetrate the hair shaft which can damage or dry out the extensions.

G Dolls do not guarantee any hair extensions which have been coloured and once coloured, they cannot be returned.

Excessive knotting can occur with poor maintenance and incorrect aftercare. Hair should be thoroughly rinsed after washing as product build up can make the extensions "sticky", which causes them to knot. Sleeping with wet hair or not braiding the hair when going sleep can also enable the extensions to knot overtime.

Knotting itself is not a manufacturing fault and will occur naturally as hair extensions are raw human hair, therefore behave the same as natural hair. It is vital to follow the aftercare rules in order to avoid severe knotting/damage.

Excessive heat causes damage to the cuticle (protective outer layer of the hair), which is made up of layers that protect the main body of the hair known as the 'cortex'.

Hair will break and snap through the mid lengths to the ends once the cuticle is damaged which is what snapping is. Snapping can be confused with shedding however the two are not the same.

Similar to your natural hair, your hair extensions shedding is normal and you can expect for it to occur throughout their lifespan.

Shedding occurs when strands of hair are pulled out from the method of installation, whether this is weft, clip or nano beads. It is very common to experience shedding unless the extensions have been sewn in tightly to the weft.

Poor aftercare, incorrect brushes and excessive heat are all common factors in causing the "bunching up" issue with extensions.

The hair can also feel dry and look dull, this is due to damaged and torn cuticles. Hair in this state will benefit from a deep conditioning treatment to help restore damaged cuticles.

Hair doesn't suddenly dread-lock, it happens over a period of time which is the result of negligence and very poor maintenance. Regular maintenance appointments are important to avoid this.

Brushing the extensions prior to shampooing and drying them straight after washing can help prevent this issue. You should never sleep with wet hair as this is most prone to matting and knotting, resulting in dreadlocks.

Taking an extra 5 minutes before sleeping to brush and braid the hair will also help avoid dread-locking.

Brushing the hair extensions regularly will keep the extensions in the best condition and prevent matting.

Matting is a result of damage to the cuticle. If the cuticles have become damaged due to heat, the cuticles will rub together resulting in matting. Using incorrect brushes, not brushing and excessive washing are also factors that can result in the hair matting.
